Mono-Miwok-Paiute

Mono Lake & Miwok Paiute Indians...
The Mono Paiute territory stretches from the Eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevadas to the boarder between California and Nevada. It lies directly east from Stockton, California.

The Paiute are experts at making twined baskets and are well known for their utilitarian style. The traditional designs seem to be horizontal and/or vertical geometric motifs of a single color on a white background.

The Miwok people were originally from the southern California area, living close to the San Joaquin and Sacramento rivers. The Paiute people lived in the southwestern portion of the United States, spread throughout northwest Arizona, southern Utah, southern Nevada, and southeast California.

Miwok Paiute basketry was often made using coiling and open work techniques.
