Story of the Modoc War of 1872-1873, in Oregon and California, which resulted in the hanging of the Modoc Indian Leader, Capt. Jack, in 1873. The Modocs violated a treaty by massacring U.S. Army General E.R.S. Canby and the Peace Commissioners on April 11,1873. This became a nationally infamous incident which prompted a national outcry against the Modoc Indians. General Canby was the only full general of the U.S. Army to be killed during the Indian wars.
These Antique Stereoscope photographs capture scenes of the War.
